Website Formatting & Final Product Decision

 Hi Everyone!

As I'm sure you've guessed by the title of this post, I'll still be creating a website as the product for my genius hour project. Although I could've just extended my blog further, I like the ability to organize content thoroughly on the website and hopefully create a YouTube channel at some point in the future for adding video content to the site. Although I have a to add the majority of the content to the site yet, I've published my Goalkeeper Training site so that I can share what I have so far.

To ensure that anyone who happens upon my website before I've completed it, I created a notice on the homepage that reads:

I chose a template that prioritizes organization. On the left panel I have Home and Skills pages, as well as a page for each category. Under the Skills page there's a breakdown of each of the categories and I've linked each of their titles so that they also take you directly to the page. Under each category page I've already created sub pages for the specific skills that I want to break down. Here's a look at part of the sidebar displaying the skills in the Distribution & Foot Skills category and the view of the categories and linked titles on the Skills page:

The features I still want to add to the site are:

  • An introduction to myself and motivation behind the website. Thinking of including this on the home page and just having contact information in a footer instead of on a separate contact page.
  • Brief explanation of the skills in each category with links to the specific skill pages.
  • Breakdown of each specific skill in writing. This will include diagrams and explanations of terms and techniques.
One piece of feedback I received from a classmate is that it could be helpful for readers with minimal soccer knowledge if I used less technical terms. As my target audience would still be people with some background knowledge of or experience playing soccer, the goal I wanted to achieve was readability for varying levels of experience and expertise of my readers. Therefore, I've decided to continue using technical terms and will not be using long in text explanations (readability of the experienced), but I will instead be linking technical terms to a glossary so that less readers with less soccer knowledge can be taken directly to the definition that I'm using of the term instead of needing to look it up for themselves and try to connect the definition to the context.

Continuing my website and breaking down the skills

Hi Everyone! I hope you enjoyed visiting my site and having a look at the format. This week I focused on creating the pages for each skill section, linking the specific skills to these pages, and starting with breaking down one of the skills. Here's a look at the front page of the distribution and foot skills section. I created a page with a brief heading explaining the importance of this category of skills. The skill I decided to start a breakdown of was goal kicks. I chose to start with goal kicks because it's one of the more straight-forward skills. Check out the goal kicks page below: While breaking down Goal Kicks I included links to the rules  and especially focused on the new rule change that no longer requires a goal kick to leave the box to be in play. I also highlighted the importance of learning this skill for goalkeepers and shared some of my own experience improving this skill as I gained the size required to add power to my kick. One thing I recognized while d...
